Maui, Hawaii

Hawaii Best time to visit: April–May or September–November

Known for: Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise, family-friendly beaches

Maui is the Hawaiian island most families ask for by name, and it earns the reputation. Wide, calm beaches like Ka’anapali and Wailea make it easy to keep younger kids happy, while the famous Road to Hana gives older kids and adults a full day of waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and switchback views they won’t stop talking about.

Most family trips split time between a resort base in West or South Maui and at least one day dedicated to Haleakala National Park: the sunrise reservation books up fast, so it’s one of the first things Dave locks in when planning a Maui trip.

Dave’s tip: Renting a car for at least part of the trip is worth it here more than almost anywhere else in Hawaii: the Road to Hana simply isn’t the same on a bus tour.

As a Certified Hawaii Travel Specialist, this is one of the destinations Dave has trained specifically on, from resort selection to inter-island logistics if you’re combining Maui with Oahu or the Big Island.

Best time to visit Maui

Maui has two main seasons rather than four. Winter, roughly December through March, brings humpback whales close to shore and the biggest crowds and highest prices. The shoulder months of April to May and September to November usually offer the best mix of good weather, easier availability and lower rates. Summer is warm, popular with families on school break, and generally dry on the leeward resort coasts of Wailea and Ka'anapali. Whichever month you pick, plan on trade winds, sun that burns faster than it feels, and a rainy side of the island around Hana.

Top things to do in Maui

Drive the Road to Hana

The Hana Highway is about 64 miles of curves, one-lane bridges and waterfall stops. Start early, bring snacks and motion-sickness remedies for the kids, and treat it as a full-day outing rather than a quick drive.

See Haleakala at sunrise or sunset

Haleakala National Park sits above the clouds and is one of the most memorable stops on the island. Sunrise visits require an advance reservation that fills up quickly, so build it in early. Sunset and stargazing are easier alternatives.

Snorkel at Molokini and Turtle Town

Boat trips to Molokini crater and the reefs near Makena are reliable family favorites. Morning departures usually have calmer water.

Spend beach days in Ka'anapali and Wailea

Both areas have wide sandy beaches, gentle entry into the water in many spots and resort pools that keep younger kids busy between swims.

Try a luau or a local food day

A traditional luau, a farm tour in Upcountry Maui or a food-truck lunch in Kihei gives the trip a taste of local culture beyond the resort.

Where to stay in Maui

Most families choose between South Maui (Wailea and Kihei), which tends to be drier, calmer and more upscale, and West Maui (Ka'anapali and Kapalua), which is lively, walkable and close to restaurants and shopping. Check current conditions and availability in the Lahaina area before booking West Maui, since recovery from the 2023 wildfires continues. Condo-style rentals with kitchens can save money for larger groups, while full-service resorts add pools, kids' programs and on-site dining.

Getting to Maui and getting around

Most visitors fly into Kahului (OGG) on Maui's north shore, either directly from the U.S. mainland or through Honolulu. Rent a car for at least part of your stay, since the best stops, including Hana and Haleakala, are hard to reach any other way. Book the car early, because inventory can run short in peak weeks.

Planning tips for your Maui vacation

  • Reserve Haleakala sunrise access as soon as the booking window opens for your dates.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and book snorkel tours for the morning.
  • Pair Maui with Oahu for a two-island trip if you have 9 days or more.
  • Ask about group room blocks if you are planning a reunion or wedding on the island.

Maui travel FAQs

How many days do you need in Maui?

Most families are happy with 6 to 8 nights. That leaves time for a beach-and-pool base, a Road to Hana day, Haleakala and a snorkel trip without rushing.

What is the best area to stay in Maui with kids?

Wailea and Ka'anapali are the most popular family bases because of their calm beaches and resort amenities. Your dates, budget and whether you want a walkable resort area usually decide between them.

Do I need a car in Maui?

For at least part of the trip, yes. Resort areas are easy without one, but the Road to Hana and Haleakala are much better with your own vehicle or a private tour.

Can a travel agent help plan a Maui vacation?

Yes. Dave is a Certified Hawaii Travel Specialist who handles resort selection, car rentals, activity timing and inter-island logistics, and can monitor your booking for better offers after you book.
